James (Jim) Edward Dickinson of Luling, TX passed away on September 29, 2023. Jim was born on November 29, 1941 in Merkel, TX.  After his father’s passing in the summer of 1942, Jim, his mother, and older sister, Janice, moved to Gonzales, TX to live with Jim’s grandmother, Kate Cobb Pettus, and his uncles, William (Bill) and Percy Pettus.

In the fall of 1953, Jim accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Gonzales.  After graduation he attended and graduated from Southwest Texas State (Texas State University) in February of 1965.  He was employed at the State Auditor’s Office from February 1965 until October 1969 when he transferred to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.  He was employed there from October 1969 to December 2001.  He was promoted to Deputy Director and worked successfully with the Texas State Legislature for many years.

In July, 2001, Jim married the love of his life, Bobbie, who stood with him in serving Jesus, the church and the community.  They enjoyed traveling the world as well as sitting together on their patio.

After retiring from the State, he became a full-time rancher.  He enjoyed traveling, hunting and any outdoor activity, especially with family, and enjoying God’s natural world with them.

In 2005, Jim was drawn closer to God when his Savior spoke to him about reading the Bible every day, which he did, every day since then. He encouraged family, friends and others to also read their Bible daily.  His prayer was that all his family know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Edward Dickinson and Virginia Pettus Dickinson Brown and one sister, Janice Dickinson Lester; also, his grandparents and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara “Bobbie” Watson-Dickinson, as well as his two sons, Todd (Rayla) Dickinson of Jonesville, TX, Jonathan (Julie) Dickinson of Gonzales, TX and step-daughter Jennifer Mae Johnson of Danville, Illinois.  Grandchildren are Collett Dickinson (Jon) of Waskom, TX, Blake Dickinson Guttierrez (Raymond) of Waskom, TX and Thomas Dickinson of Jonesville, TX.  Also, Megan Dickinson Blakeney (Tim) of Cuero, TX, Mikayla Dickinson of Gonzales, TX, Jonathan Dickinson of Gonzales, TX and Heather Johnson of Danville, Illinois.  He is also survived by his five great-grandchildren; as well as his first wife, Barbara Thomas Dickinson Aker.
