Doris Eileen Soefje Hewell

Doris Eileen Soefje Hewell, age 95 of Seguin, passed away on February 22, 2024.  Doris was born on April 27, 1928, in Leesville, Texas to Hilda (Grimm) and Dono Soefje.  

Doris joined the Methodist Church in Leesville, Texas at 13 and regularly attended church and Sunday School.  She attended school in Leesville for eleven years graduating as the Class Salutatorian.  After graduation, she went to work for Southwestern Bell Company as a telephone operator.  

On June 6, 1948, she married Clarence Alvin Hewell at the Methodist Church in Leesville.  They were blessed with four children, Catherine Eileen Hewell Vorpahl, Sharon Esther Hewell, Patricia Ann Hewell, and Clarence Alvin Hewell, Jr.  

After her son Al started school, she worked as a bookkeeper at Hewell Brothers Chevrolet in Nixon.  The family moved to Seguin in 1967 where Doris worked as a Martin L. Steger Supply Company bookkeeper.  She served on the Board of Directors and was the Board Secretary.   After twenty-two years of service, she retired in 1989.  

Doris enjoyed quilting, gardening, and working in the yard.  Her most special times were spent among family and friends, especially at Soefje/ Grimm, Hewell/Hensley gatherings, or Leesville Homecoming Celebrations.  

Doris and Alvin were active members of the First Methodist Church of Seguin, where she held a life membership in the United Methodist Women organization. 

Doris is preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years, Alvin Hewell, daughter Patricia Ann Hewell, son-in-law, Earnest Vorpahl,  parents and her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Ruby Esther (Hensley) and Thomas Coke Hewell, Sr., her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Thomas and Frances Hewell and John Bird and Wildajean Hewell, and nieces Marian Sue Baenziger, Martha Jo Haas and husband Gary, and Peggy Hewell,  and great-nephew Kenny Eshelman.

Survivors include her daughters, Cathy Vorpahl and Sharon Hewell and fiancé Mick Mikulenka; son, Al Hewell, and wife Kathy; sister, Carol Dodgen and husband Tom; grandchildren, Jeffery Jubela and fiancé Mary Just Buchholz, Kyle Jubela and wife Lisa, Kristopher Vorpahl, Kimberley Vorpahl, Dr. Valerie Hewell, and husband Jared Lundgren, and Brien Hewell and wife Elizabeth; great-grandchildren, Michael Vorpahl, Hunter Jubela, and wife Macey. Ryland Jubela, Reese Jubela, Emma Jubela, Gavin Vorpahl, Morgan Sekula and husband Austin, Caleb Kunde and wife Cassie, Max Kunde, Bailee Anderson, Emery Vorpahl, Laura Hewell, Blake Lundgren, Bali Buchholz, and Mason Buchholz; great-great-grandchildren, Wyatt Jubela and Hudson Jubela; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many friends.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 26, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Tres Hewell Mortuary.  Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at Nixon Methodist Church with the Reverend Audrey Hewell officiating.  Interment will follow in the Nixon Cemetery.  A reception will follow at the Richardson Center.  

Pallbearers will be Jeffery Jubela, Kyle Jubela, Kristopher Vorpahl, Kimberley Vorpahl, Valerie Hewell, and Brien Hewell. Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Dodgen, Stephen Dodgen, Troy DePalermo, Colby DePalermo, Johnny Hewell, Joe Hewell, Tommy Hewell, Dean Eshelman, Mike Bond, Louis Soefje Jr., Stanley Burris, and K. John Odom.  

Instead of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Leesville Cemetery, CR 155, Leesville, Texas 78122, or to the Nixon Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 427 Nixon, Texas 78140, or Nixon Methodist Church, 410 N Franklin Ave, Nixon, TX 78140.      

The family would like to give special thanks to her caregiver and friend, Diana Montanez, along with Lynn Hancock and her staff at Willowbrook Personal Care Home.
