Citizen concerned over cost of elections, voter turnout

Posted

Editor,

Here we go again.  This is the third election to fill the seat in the House of Representatives of our State in district 17.  If we had people come out to vote this election would have probably been un-necessary.  I wonder if people have any idea what it costs this county, and therefore the taxpayers of this county to conduct an election.  Even with condensed precincts for voting there is a cost of at least a Judge and an Alternate Judge.  There is also the cost of printing ballots and getting the voting packages of supplies ready for each precinct and the counting and reporting of the vote.  I do not have a total cost to report but it is significant.  After all that money is spent to do the runoff we will still have a very low turnout of voters.  What a shame that there are people in third world countries risking their lives to vote while in the most free nation in the world we cannot garner more than a 25 or 30 percent vote on who will run the government.  Also if you have noted the newspaper reports the candidates in this runoff have spent from 2 1/2 to 11 1/2 times the amount of money that the job pays running their campaigns.  That also may be costing you something someday.  We will be sitting at the polls again February 17 waiting on voters to come in.  I hope it is more than the 60 persons out of about 2000 in the precinct that came out to vote in the last election.
