Sassy soprano returns to Gonzales for one-night only concert

She came into this world singing and has never stopped. Savannah White Heximer has wowed family, friends, and the community of Gonzales with her singing and will do so again this weekend on the Crystal Theatre stage.

As an infant, a ride in the car was not enough; there had to be music for her to sleep. “Deep in the Heart of Texas” and “Old MacDonald” floated up from her car seat. After watching “Phantom of the Opera,” she learned every song and sang them nearly pitch perfect … at five. She stepped out on the stage at the Crystal Theatre’s youth program with two older and bigger children, but only her voice could be heard.

A woman in attendance — we’ll call her Willa — informed Savannah’s mom about a youth choir at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin. The choir director listened to her sing and allowed her to participate. Savannah was seven and a half; youth were supposed to be nine to join.

Her parents supported and encouraged, but never forced, her to sing. Knowing this was her passion and a gift to be opened, her family decided that Savannah’s desire to sing warranted an education that nurtured her talent. After searching nationwide and internationally, her family opted for a public school in Houston. Savannah auditioned for and was accepted to HSPVA (High School for Performing and Visual Arts, now called Kinder HSPVA). She graduated in 2021.

Savannah was accepted to and is in her third year of studies at the prestigious Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. The school was inspired and funded by George Eastman, the founder of Eastman Kodak. She will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in music and aspires to sing opera around the world.

She has returned to her hometown of Gonzales for the winter break and wants to share her gift of song with those who have encouraged her. She will be performing at the Crystal Theatre this Saturday night, Jan. 13. Her concert will include opera, classical and contemporary music.

Come and Take It Dance school will showcase its talented dancers who study under the ever-smiling and professional dancer Gary Franco. In addition to entertainment, light refreshments and a raffle will take place at intermission. Doors will open at 6 p.m.
