Mental health first aid course offered in Shiner

Posted

Mental health is vital to both an individual’s life, and those around them: in their home, their friend circle, co-workers, or community members, etc.

When one member of the community is struggling, the ripple effects can be wide, and potentially life altering. Likewise, the ripple effect of actual knowledge and understanding of how to help can not only save lives, but communities at large.

On Thursday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., a mental health first aid course is being offered by Texas A&M AgriLife, Texas A&M Healthy South Texas and the Shiner Lutheran Church at the church, 1103 N. Ave. B, Shiner.

This course will enable mental health first aid responders the knowledge to recognize the signs and symptoms of potential mental health and substance abuse challenges. The course is designed to teach participants how to listen in a non-judgmental manner, give reassurance, and information on how to refer an individual suffering with these issues to the appropriate resources available in our area communities.

To register for this life changing course please pre-register no later than Tuesday, Nov. 1, after which all information will be received via email for participants. There will be course materials that require completion (approximately two hours online) prior to the in-person course, For further information call 361-798-2221. The course is $75 for all portions, per participant.
