Lady Apaches open district with win

The Gonzales Lady Apaches have won two big games in a row, including a rivalry game against Cuero last Friday, a five-set win, and a three-set victory over Austin Eastside. Against Cuero, the Lady Apaches won (19-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-15, 15-12). Leaders for the team including Chelsie Hastings with 11 kills and Rachel Staggs and Hayley Sample with 10 each. Ali Rocha had 17 kills while Staggs had 16. Hailey Riojas came away with two blocks. Rocha had five aces, Staggs had four and Maura Garcia had three. Samantha Barnick led the team with 10 kills.

Gonzales then opened district with a (25-16, 25-14, 25-15) win over Eastside. Leading the way was Hastings, Riojas, Staggs and Sample with seven kills each. Rocha had 12 assists while Kiley Allen had eight. Hastings came away with a total of 3.5 blocks while Riojas had one. Garcia scored on five aces, Rocha had four and Barnick had two.

“All the girls helped with the win,” Gonzales head coach Bernice Voigt said of the win. The Lady Apaches have an open night tonight, then play Navarro at home at 6 p.m. where they will host Teacher Appreciation Night.
