Lady Apaches beats Navarro in extra innings

The Gonzales Lady Apaches completed the greatest comeback in the program’s history with a 16-15 win over the Navarro Lady Panthers in extra innings Tuesday, April 9.

The Lady Apaches trailed throughout the match, allowing Navarro to take a 9-1 lead entering the third inning.

In the first meeting between the two teams, the Lady Apaches fell to Navarro, 4-3, in a walk-off.

Trailing 15-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning, senior outfielder Kelly Breitschopf kicked off the rally with solo home run that sparked the team to score eight more runs to cut the lead to just one, 15-14.

Gonzales forced the game into extra innings with a RBI sacrifice by freshman first baseman Alexis Hernandez in the bottom of the seventh.

The Lady Apaches completed the comeback with a RBI single by freshman pitcher Dixie Rae Lester, with senior catcher Sydney McCray scoring the game winner in the bottom of the eighth.

Gonzales improves to 6-2 in district and are tied for second place with Navarro in District 28-4A.

The Lady Apaches will face the Cuero Friday, April 12 for the final road game of the season and will host the JFK Lady Rockets for the regular season finale Tuesday, April 16. Gonzales will be looking to avenge an earlier loss to Cuero this season.

First pitch for both games is set at 7 p.m.
