FUNdraiser benefits historic Nixon Latin American Cemetery

The historic Nixon Latin American Cemetery Association, which is more than 100 years old, is sponsoring a fun-filled FUNdraiser on Saturday, May 7, at the Nixon-Smiley Livestock Showbarn.

The group is earning funds to improve traffic patterns, a new gate entrance and fencing, all attributed to the TxDOT expansion of Highway 80. This is the first fundraiser sponsored by this group since 1957.

The FUNdraiser is BYOB and opens at 11 a.m. with a BBQ chicken and sausage lunch with trimmings for $10 per person. It features Gospel music at 11 a.m. and Conjunto music from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. by The Perez Family of Gonzales and Lupita Rodela of Smiley.

It will also feature coronas (wreaths) for Mother’s Day, an exciting silent auction, huge raffle (five for $20), competitive cornhole tournament ($20), and a yummy Bake Sale. Loteria begins at 1 p.m. ($10 for 10 games), along with $5 juicy hamburger plates at 5 pm. Special activities for the children are also planned. Raffle winner announcements begin at 6 p.m., while the Silent Auction closes at 7:30 p.m. The dance ends at 9 p.m.

Everyone is invited to Nixon for this FUNdraiser. For those wishing to make donations, checks may be made payable to the Nixon Latin American Cemetery Association and mailed to Third Coast Bank, PO Box 188, Nixon, TX 78140.
