The Gonzales Lady Apaches hosted the No. 4-ranked Cuero Lady Gobblers Monday, March 25.

The Lady Apaches started the match slow, falling behind, 7-0, at the end of the fifth inning.

Gonzales got on base eight times and earned two runs from a solo home run by Sydney McCray in the bottom the sixth inning and an RBI single (Ava Carrizales scored) in the bottom of the seventh; McCray went four for four at bat in the 7-2 loss to Cuero.

“We've been kind of struggling to get that key hit and the moment we find it, man, we're going to be unstoppable but we just we just need that we got our runners on,” head softball coach Michelle Uribe said. “We were running bases the way we wanted to see it and you know, that the one kid is going to step up and get some RBIs is really going to get us going.”

Seniors Kelly Breitschopf and Dakota Schmidt helped the Lady Apaches get on base; and kept Cuero under double digits for the first time since Friday, March 8.

“It feels good, but I feel like we could have done better. I feel like we could have cut out a lot of errors,” Schmidt said.

The Lady Apaches will hit the road to San Antonio for district match against the JFK Lady Rockets Thursday, March 28.

“We definitely need to be more loud in the dugout and be more excited so that we'll get on rallies and do better,” Breitschopf said.

Uribe has her mind set on JFK and to move on from the Cuero loss.

“We like to say be a goldfish and just forget it as fast as possible and move on to the next one,” Uribe said.

First pitch for JFK game is set for 7 p.m.
