Beloved former Inquirer employee Louis Decker remembered

Former Gonzales Inquirer sports editor and advertising account executive Louis E. Decker, 44, passed away after a brief illness on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at The Heights of Gonzales.

Decker, who was born Aug. 22, 1977 and was a member of the Gonzales High School Class of 1995, was the son of Marsha and the late L.D. Decker.

Decker, who suffered from childhood diabetes, had been hospitalized recently at Methodist Hospital Specialty and Transplant in San Antonio for decompensated liver failure and acute kidney failure. He had been considered for a liver transplant, but because his kidney failure had advanced too far, he was no longer considered a candidate for the procedure.

He was transferred to the Heights of Gonzales for hospice care and members of the Class of 1995 and private donors helped pay for his room and board at the nursing facility, while Hospice of South Texas donated attendant care as well as medications to make him comfortable in his final hours.

Decker loved his Gonzales Apaches, especially covering their athletic exploits in the pages of the Gonzales Inquirer. During high school, he served as manager and statistician for the Apache athletic teams and was well-loved by his classmates and teammates.

A GoFundMe account was set up to help raise money for Decker at https://gofund.me/5a877d8d. Funds contributed will be used to pay for Decker’s final expenses and to set up a trust fund for his beloved grandchildren as per his final wishes.

Final arrangements are pending with Seydler-Hill Funeral Home.
