Apaches sweep season series from Memorial

The Gonzales Apaches traveled to San Antonio for the series finale with the San Antonio Memorial Minutemen Tuesday, April 9.

The Apaches completed the season sweep of the Minutemen in an 8-3 win in six innings; the teams did not finish the seventh inning due to severe storms entering in the area, although Gonzales did score six additional runs in that inning.

Gonzales head baseball coach Garry Beveridge knew this was a must-win series for his team and gave credit to Memorial for giving them a good battle in the series.

“We needed that one. That was a must-win even this early in the season, so it's good to have it done especially as hairy as it got there. And that team right there deserves all the credit. That's an unbelievable turnaround from where they were last year,” Beveridge said.

The Apaches held Memorial to one hit in the game and pitcher Dakota DuBose struck out multiple Memorial batters.

“Defense was good pitching was good. Like I said, that we can make sure that we throw strikes and keep people off bases, we give ourself a better chance to give them those free passes and that’s big,” Beveridge said.

The Apaches will face their toughest series of the season against La Vernia on the road Friday, April 12, and Beveridge knows his team has to limit the number of players on base for their opponent.

“We have such a young team, we're gonna have to get turned around in a hurry and try to fix a lot of our mistakes, right now baserunning was our enemy. And that's gonna be our biggest thing is to not run ourselves out of innings. We gotta give ourselves a chance. And so we have some things that we need to work on, but for a group like this, that's a good thing. We're not so much focused on La Vernia; we're focused on how we can get ourselves better,” Beveridge said.

First pitch for game one of the La Vernia series is set for 7 p.m.
