The Gonzales Apaches traveled to Seguin for their district opener against the Navarro Panthers Friday, March 22.

The Apaches and the Panthers exchanged runs in the game’s first four innings, but Navarro scored the final six runs to beat Gonzales, 11-6.

Apaches head baseball coach Gary Beveridge was proud of how his team performed against one of the top teams in the district.

“With the last couple games we've had and the outcomes that haven't gone our way, moral victories aren't a big thing, but the way that our team stepped up and put out a great performance against a really great team is something we can build upon. That's gonna be big for us,” Beveridge said.

Gonzales will take on Navarro for game two of the two-game series, and one of the things Beveridge said they must do, heading into game two, is controlling the pitching.

“We're going into a real short week and so we want to keep our bats hot. We did a great job coming out and scoring runs, but we want to make sure that we serve up our defense and cut down the errors and we really want to come out and make sure that we put ourselves in a good place, moving forward with district,” Beveridge said.

The Apaches fell in game two to Navarro, 12-3, and kicked off district with a 0-2 record.

Gonzales will travel to San Antonio Thursday, March 28 for a district match against the JFK Rockets.

First pitch for the JFK game is set for 7 p.m.
