Amber Alert issued for missing Gonzales teen

Gonzales County Sheriff’s deputies put out an Amber Alert on Tuesday, Jan. 30 for a Gonzales teen they believe left home with a 22-year-old man Monday, Jan. 29.

Deputies said they believed Scarlett Smith, 14, to be in danger after she went missing. She was last seen at 11 p.m. Monday in the 15700 block of West US 90-A in Gonzales. Smith is a white female, 5-foot-4, 187 pounds, with red or auburn hair and hazel eyes and she was last seen wearing a red Nike hoodie.

Deputies believe she may be with Barry Van Mersbergen, who also may go by the name of Ben. He is a 22-year-old white male and is 6-foot-2, 160 pounds, with brown hair and eyes.

Van Mersbergen was last seen driving a tan 2012 GMC Terrain with TX license plate 3RVWG and was last seen in Gonzales.

Deputies are now saying it appears Smith went willingly with Van Mersbergen after initially fearing an abduction.

Authorities in Williamson, Milam, Lee, Milam, Lee, Burleson, Washington, Austin, Colorado, Fort Bend, Waller, Wharton, Matagorda, Fayette, Lavaca, Jackson, Calhoun, Victoria, DeWitt, Gonzales, Goliad, Caldwell, Bastrop, Travis, Hays, Blanco, Kendall, Comal, Bexar, Bandera, Medina, Frio, Atascosa, Wilson, Karnes, Refugio, Bee, Live Oak, McMullen and Guadalupe counties have also been notified.
