GHS, NSHS conclude seasons

Apparently 12 matches weren’t enough to decide the District 26-A volleyball race.

So the Shiner and Weimar volleyball teams will meet for a third time after both teams finished 11-1 in district play, and split the season series. The tiebreaker match between the Lady Comanches and Lady Cats will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hallettsville High School with the winner receiving a first-round bye in the Class A state playoffs and the loser meeting the third-place team out of 25-A.

Shiner (25-14) earned its district co-championship with a 3-0 win over Waelder Tuesday at Shiner High School. The scores were 25-6, 25-6, 25-7.

LaNeshia Hunt (team-high 9 aces, team-high 7 digs, team-high 6 kills, block) and Kristin Schacherl (team-high 12 assists, 2 aces, 2 digs, 2 kills) led the way for the Lady Comanches. Emmalie Berkovsky (3 aces, dig), Tabitha Blaschke (3 kills, block), Meagan Chumchal (2 aces, assist, dig), Amanise Coleman (4 kills, block), Tamara Hajek (5 aces, 3 digs), Jennifer Hartl (2 kills, dig), Jayde Kurtz (2 aces, dig), Lauren Oden (6 digs, 4 aces, assist) and Julianna Rankin (3 kills, dig) also contributed.

Waelder finished its first season under Meghan House with a 3-17 record. Statistics were not available for the Lady Cats.

Tuesday’s match was the final volleyball contest for a trio of Waelder seniors as Alex Benitez, Jackie Garcia and Hailey Rincon played their final high school volleyball matches.

Karnes City 3, Nixon-Smiley 1

The Nixon-Smiley volleyball team’s season came to an end in a 3-1 loss to Karnes City Tuesday in Karnes City. The scores were 21-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-13.

Alena Alvarez (team-high 11 assists), Hailey Boatright (team-high 7 aces, team-high 7 blocks, 3 kills, dig), Jennifer Flores (team-high 13 digs), Megan Guerra (team-high 11 assists, 9 digs) and Devon Tristan (team-high 8 kills, team-high 7 aces, 8 digs, 5 blocks) led the way for the Lady Mustangs. Treca DeLeon (11 digs), Kelby Henderson (7 digs, 6 kills), Savannah Martinez (6 kills, 4 aces, 4 digs, 2 blocks) and Abby Scarbrough (5 blocks, 2 digs, 2 kills) also contributed.

Nixon-Smiley finished the season with a 12-20 record overall and a 3-9 mark in 28-2A play. Boatright, DeLeon, Flores, Henderson, Scarbrough and Tristan all played their final high school volleyball match for the Lady Mustangs.

Smithville 3, Gonzales 2

A 2-0 match lead wasn’t enough for Gonzales as Smithville rallied to win the next three games and claim a 3-2 match victory Tuesday at Smithville High School. The scores were 23-25, 14-25, 25-19, 25-14, 15-12.

Lindsey Akers (team-high 4 aces, 14 digs, 2 kills), Carly Bozka (team-high 28 digs, 2 aces), Kiley Braune (team-high 27 assists, 8 digs, 2 aces) and Allison Raley (team-high 12 kills, team-high 5 blocks, 15 digs) led the way for the Lady Apaches. Molly Barnick (2 kills, 2 digs, assist), Kendall Fougeret (3 kills, 8 digs), Danyelle Glass (9 kills, 3 digs), Cassidy LaFleur (13 digs) and Morgan Simper (15 digs) also contributed.

Five Gonzales seniors played in their final high school volleyball match on Tuesday. They were Akers, Bozka, Braune, Raley and Simper.

The Lady Apaches ended the season 10-24 overall with a 1-9 district record.
