Shiner dominates in 1st district win

It is said that two 100-yard rushers are better than one.

On Friday, the Shiner football team proved that two 100-yard rushers can even be better than one 200-yard rusher. Jacob Stafford and Caleb Curtis both ran for more than 100 yards to lead the Comanches to a 41-6 victory over Yorktown at Yorktown.

Stafford ran seven times for 124 yards and three touchdowns and Curtis ran 17 times for 134 yards as Shiner (3-5, 1-1 in Division I-District 15-A) ran for 400 yards on 39 carries, collectively. Yorktown (3-4, 1-1 in DI-15-A) could not find much offense outside of Jayden Barefield, who ran for a game-high 203 yards on 19 carries.

Stafford began the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run to give his team a 7-0 lead at the 10:15 mark of the first quarter. Stafford struck again in the second quarter as he scored on a 47-yard run to put the Comanches up, 14-0, with 7:14 left in the period.

Evel Jones got into the scoring act a few minutes later as he hauled in a 35-yard touchdown pass from Stafford to give Shiner a 21-0 lead at the 3:40 mark of the second quarter. The play gave Stafford his only completion of the night as he went 1-of-4 for 35 yards.

It didn’t take long for the Wildcats to respond as Barefield scored seconds later on an 84-yard run to cut the Comanches’ lead to 21-6 with 3:21 left before halftime.

The score provided Barefield with more than 40 percent of his rushing yards, and proved to be the only Yorktown score.

Jones scored one more time on a 55-yard run just seconds later to increase the Shiner lead to 27-6 with 2:58 left before intermission. Jones nearly gave the Comanches a third 100-yard rusher as he had 90 yards on five carries.

Shiner added two more touchdowns in the third quarter.

Marlon Wallace scored from nine yards out at the 7:04 mark of the period, and Stafford capped the scoring with a 15-yard run with 42 seconds left before the start of the fourth quarter.

The Comanches host Flatonia at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Comanche Field in Shiner. The contest will be the final home game of the regular season for Shiner.
