Comanches whip Kenedy

Steven Cerny thought his Shiner football team would be in a dogfight against Kenedy on Friday.

Thanks to his team’s defense and running game, the contest was not even close. The Comanches scored the game’s first 33 points and limited the Lions to 153 yards of total offense in a 33-7 rout Friday at Lion Stadium in Kenedy.

Friday’s contest also was the District 15-A-Division I opener for both teams. Shiner (6-1, 1-0 in 15-A-DI) amassed 324 yards of total offense, including 315 on the ground.

The Comanches got things started with a 17-yard touchdown run from Caleb Curtis to take a 7-0 lead at the 7:06 mark of the first quarter. They struck again less than three minutes later as Evel Jones scored from 67 yards out to increase the lead to 14-0 with 4:22 left in the opening quarter.

Curtis added a 26-yard touchdown run with 1:06 remaining in the second quarter to put Shiner up 20-0. The Comanches led by the same score at halftime.

Trevion Flowers got into the scoring act with a 3-yard touchdown run to increase the Shiner lead to 26-0 at the 6:55 mark of the third quarter. Flowers hit Jones for a 9-yard touchdown to cap the scoring for the Comanches at 33-0 with 1:53 left in the third.

Kenedy (4-2, 0-1 in 15-A-DI) put points on the scoreboard with 2:18 left in the fourth quarter thanks to a 12-yard touchdown run from Rolando Zepeda. Zepeda’s touchdown run capped the scoring at 33-7.

Flowers led all rushers with 108 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Jones (5 carries, 85 yards, TD), Curtis (5-52, 2 TDs), Brady Cejka (6-27) and Jacob Stafford (8-25) also contributed to Shiner’s ground game.

The Comanches have a bye this week and return to the field Oct. 26 when they host Three Rivers.

St. Paul 44, John Paul II 20

St. Paul jumped out to a 38-0 lead and never looked back en route to a 44-20 victory over New Braunfels John Paul II Friday at Comanche Stadium in Shiner. The Cardinals ran for 317 yards on 27 carries, and had a pair of 100-yard rushers in Martin Kennedy (7-162, 2 TDs) and Adam Hollenbach (9-113, 3 TDs).

Hollenbach began the scoring for St. Paul (4-2, 2-0 in TAPPS 5-DIII) with a 4-yard touchdown run to put his team up 6-0 at the 9:51 mark of the first quarter. Hollenbach struck again with an 11-yard score with 5:53 left in the opening quarter to increase the Cardinals’ lead to 12-0.

Kennedy got into the scoring act with a 70-yard touchdown run to give St. Paul an 18-0 lead at the 10:03 mark of the second quarter. Mitchell McElroy hit Dylan Barton for a 12-yard touchdown pass with 54 seconds left in the second quarter to make it 24-0 – the halftime score.

Kennedy scored on a 55-yard run at the 10:47 mark of the third quarter to make it 31-0 for the Cardinals. Hollenbach struck again with a 39-yard score to give St. Paul its largest lead of the evening, 38-0, with 7:43 left in the third.

John Paul II (1-4, 0-1 in TAPPS 5-DIII) got on the scoreboard with a 1-yard score from Michael McCabe to cut the lead to 38-7 at the 1:11 mark of the third. A 35-yard touchdown run from Cameron Ahrens made it 38-13 with 9:48 left in the fourth quarter, and a 35-yard score from Mark Cooper cut the Cardinals’ lead to 38-20 at the 4:02 mark of the fourth.

McElroy hit Barton for a 13-yard score with 15 seconds left in the contest to cap the scoring at 44-20. McElroy completed 10-of-16 passes for a season-high 109 yards and two touchdowns, while Barton led all receivers with four catches for 87 yards.

Despite the 24-point deficit, the Centurions still managed to gain 298 yards on 52 carries. Like the Cardinals, John Paul II had a pair of 100-yard rushers in McCabe (17-111, TD) and Ahrens (17-109, TD).

St. Paul has a bye this week and returns to the field Oct. 26 when it visits Bryan St. Joseph.

Stockdale 34, Nixon-Smiley 7

Stockdale scored 27 unanswered points to break a 7-7 tie and clinch a 34-7 victory over Nixon-Smiley Friday at Mustang Stadium in Nixon. The Brahmas had 480 yards of total offense – 306 rushing, 174 passing.

Matt Valadez started the scoring with a 56-yard touchdown run to give Stockdale (3-3, 2-1 in 15-2A-DII) a 7-0 lead at the 10:45 mark of the first quarter. Tristan Newman answered with a 28-yard touchdown run for the Mustangs to tie the game at 7 with 8:13 left in the opening quarter.

Valadez struck again with an 8-yard touchdown run to give the Brahmas a 14-7 lead with 27 seconds remaining in the second quarter. The second quarter was a Jacob Cardenas-to-Josh Vela air show for Stockdale.

The duo connected for a 90-yard touchdown pass to increase the lead to 21-7 at the 9:35 mark of the second quarter. Cardenas and Vela connected again for a 7-yard score to make it 27-7 with 1:21 remaining before halftime.

Dustin Mosier capped the scoring with a 45-yard touchdown run at the 3:51 mark of the third quarter. Cardenas (5-11-1, 174 yards, 2 TDs) led all passers, while Valadez (12-139, 2 TDs) led all rushers, and Vela (3-122, 2 TDs) led all receivers.

Nixon-Smiley (0-6, 0-3 in 15-2A-DII) was led in rushing by Newman (18-96, TD). Jared Van Auken (9-32), Miguel Hernandez (5-30) and Nick Pena (3-20) also contributed to the Mustangs’ 193-yard rushing total.

Nixon-Smiley hosts Bloomington at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The game also will be the Mustangs’ annual homecoming contest.
