Comanches rally past Horns, 27-24

For the second week in a row, the Shiner football team faced a high-octane passing attack on Friday.

The Comanches also allowed a receiver to gain more than 100 yards on just eight catches. But unlike a 49-28 loss to Hallettsville on Sept. 7, Shiner found a way to win.

Jacob Stafford’s 2-yard touchdown run with less than three minutes to play gave the Comanches their third and final lead of the game as they rallied to defeat Schulenburg, 27-24, for the first time since 2008 Friday at Comanche Stadium.

Shiner (2-1) last beat the Shorthorns, 41-8, in the 2008 season opener. The Comanches earned their win on Friday with a solid rushing attack that gained 339 yards on 41 carries.

Early on it was Schulenburg (2-1) who struck first as Ross Bludau hit Jeffrey Lara for a 76-yard touchdown pass to put the Shorthorns up 7-0 at the 9:42 mark of the first quarter.

But Shiner answered back as Trevion Flowers scored on a 23-yard run to tie the game at 7 with 2:52 left in the opening quarter.

Alex Lara hit a 36-yard field goal to put Schulenburg up 10-7 at the 9:53 mark of the second quarter. But Flowers scored again on a 2-yard run to give Shiner its first lead of the game, 13-10, with 5:05 left in the second quarter.

The Comanches held that lead until the 6:29 mark of the third quarter when Gerardo Montoya scored from two yards out to give the Shorthorns a 17-13 lead.

Shiner struck again as Evel Jones scored on a 38-yard run to put his team up 20-17 with 2:15 left in the third.

Bludau hit Jeffrey Lara for a 52-yard touchdown with 41 seconds remaining in the third quarter to give their team a 24-20 lead. That lead stood until Stafford’s 2-yard score with 2:53 left in the contest.

Bludau hit 14-of-31 passes for 272 yards to provide Schulenburg with the bulk of its offensive production. Lara caught eight passes for 198 yards to lead all receivers.

Jones led all rushers with 152 yards on 11 carries, while Flowers had 93 yards on 15 touches. Caleb Curtis ran for 60 yards on 10 carries, and Stafford had 34 yards on five carries.

Schulenburg was limited to 68 yards rushing with Bludau gaining 25 yards on nine carries. Shiner visits Randolph at 7:30 p.m. Friday
