Morris, Pohler cap golf careers

A pair of area golfers saw their high school careers come to an end Friday.

Nathan Morris of Nixon-Smiley and Matt Pohler of Shiner – both seniors – participated in their final high school golf tournaments as they both played in the state golf tournament Thursday and Friday in Austin. Morris competed in the Class 2A state tournament at Roy Kizer Golf Course, while Pohler was in the Class A state tournament at Lions Municipal Golf Course.

Pohler finished in a fourth-place tie with a two-day score of 157 (75-82). He and Cmaeron Boyd of Grapeland finished 11 strokes back of state champion Jackson Latimer of Martin’s Mill, who shot a two-day score of 146 (72-74).

Latimer’s individual championship helped Martin’s Mill finish second with a two-day collective score of 671 (336-335). Rankin won the team championship with a two-day score 665 (335-330).

In the 2A tournament, Morris shot a two-day score of 158 (79-79) and finished in a tie for 22nd place with Austin Chambers of Troup. The individual champion was Jake Blenden of Crawford, who shot a two-day even-par score of 142 (71-71).

The Weimar “A” team won the 2A team championship as the Wildcats shot 613 (318-295), and the Weimar “B” team finished second with 627 (312-315). Weimar will move down to Class A next year.
