Tonight’s area football games

Posted

While the Gonzales football team was in action Thursday night, the other four area teams — Luling, Nixon-Smiley, St. Paul and Shiner — are in action tonight.

Weimar (2-2) at Shiner (4-1)

7:30 p.m. today at Comanche Stadium, Shiner

Tonight’s game will not only be the final nondistrict tuneup for both teams, but also Shiner’s homecoming game. This also will be Weimar’s second trip to Comanche Stadium in three weeks after the Wildcats rallied past St. Paul, 22-21, Sept. 21.

Weimar operates out of a double-slot pistol look or a two-back pistol look. Quarterback Seth Helmcamp is the operator of the Wildcats’ offense, and Shiner coach Steven Cerny refers to him as “a game manager who has a lot of speed.”

Shiner and Weimar both lost to Hallettsville this season as well. The Brahmas beat the Comanches (49-28) and the Wildcats (27-2).

St. Paul (2-2) at Brazos Christian (4-1)

7:30 p.m. today at Brazos Christian Field, Bryan

These teams have become fierce district rivals over the last few seasons, and tonight they begin district play against each other. A year ago, Brazos Christian snapped a four-game losing streak against the Cardinals with a 42-19 victory.

One thing worth noting about the Eagles’ win last season was Jake Wachsmuth wasn’t St. Paul’s coach a year ago. He is back, and is looking to improve to 4-0 all-time against Brazos Christian tonight.

The Eagles operate out of the power-I or three-back formations. Wachsmuth said his opponent’s strength is its lines, and that their lines “will present a challenge for us.”

Goliad (4-1, 1-0) at Luling (2-3, 1-0)

7:30 p.m. today at Eagle Stadium, Luling

Perhaps the Tigers said a few Hail Mary’s before the final play of their 21-20 victory over Jourdanton last week. Goliad’s prayers were answered as quarterback Dalton Sturm hit Jalen Moore for a 70-yard touchdown to tie the game with no time on the clock, and Sturm followed with the game-winning extra point.

Sturm has passed for 535 yards and five touchdowns, and rushed for 331 yards and eight scores. The Tigers operate out of the slot-T or the spread on offense.

The Eagles hope homefield advantage will come into play tonight, especially since tonight’s game is the annual homecoming contest.

Nixon-Smiley (0-4, 0-1) at Dilley (2-2, 1-0)

7:30 p.m. today at Gosch Stadium, Dilley

A year ago these teams were involved in a 43-42, double-overtime thriller as Nixon-Smiley claimed the win that night. Chances are Dilley hasn’t forgotten about that one.

The Wolves come into tonight’s contest fresh off of a 25-18 victory over Stockdale a week ago in the District 15-2A-Division II opener for both teams. The Mustangs, on the other hand, are still in search of their first win of the season.

Dilley is led offensively by quarterback Will Urban (308 yards passing, 189 rushing) and Orlando Bernal (247 yards rushing). The Wolves operate offensively out of the spread, but run a lot of zone read and option out of it.
