Area tracksters compete in Weimar

WEIMAR – With district track and field meets coming up in less than a week, a trio of area programs had a good test on March 22.

The Gonzales, St. Paul and Shiner track and field programs all competed in the Weimar Relays March 22 at Weimar High School. The Shiner boys finished sixth with 63 points, while Gonzales was 10th with 27.

On the girls side, Shiner was 11th (24 points), St. Paul was 12th (15.5) and Gonzales was 14th (5). There were 14 boys teams and 15 girls teams competing in the Weimar Relays.

Shiner competed in the District 28-A Meet April 4 in Ganado, while Gonzales has the Randolph Relays Saturday in San Antonio. St. Paul competes in the Logos Prep Relays Saturday in Sugarland.

Boys

Shiner received the bulk of its points from the 800- and 400-meter relay teams, which both finished in the top three. The quartet of Marcus Coleman, Trevion Flowers, Evel Jones and Zach Lawrence won the 800 relay with a time of 1:31.72, and claimed third in the 400 relay with a time of 43.99 seconds.

Jones also finished second in the 400 run (52.31) and fourth in the triple jump (42-1). Flowers and Coleman finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 200 as Flowers recorded a time of 23.17 seconds and Coleman had a time of 23.19.

Don Cartwright led the way for Gonzales with a third-place finish in the 100 as he recorded a time of 11.06 seconds. Cecil Johnson finished fifth in the 100 (11.21) and sixth in the 200 (23.27).

Cartwright teamed up with Chris Cerda, Troy Hernandez and Darrance James in the 400 relay, and the quartet finished fifth (44.32). Cerda, Hernandez and James joined Coltin Russell in the 800 and 1,600 relays.

The 800 relay team finished fifth (1:34.72) and the 1,600 relay team was fourth (3:38).

Cody Jurek also claimed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 42-4.

Girls

Alexa Schaefer accounted for 14 of St. Paul’s 15.5 points as she won the 400 run (1:04.5) and finished fourth in the long jump (14-10). Madison Kurtz came up with the Lady Cardinals’ other 1.5 points as she finished in a fifth-place tie in the 400 run (1:06.2).

Shiner scored 20 of its 24 points in hurdle events. Stacey Perez won the 100 hurdles (15.84), while Meloni Burger finished second in the 300 hurdles (48.5), and Emmalie Berkovsky was fifth in the 100 hurdles (17.47).

The Lady Comanches’ other points came from Lauren Oden, who finished fourth in the discus (95-10). Gonzales’ points came from a fourth-place finish from Krisslynn Sexton in the 400 run (1:06.1) and a sixth-place finish from Bailey Connell in the 100 (12.96).
