Helmuth Ernest Ehrig, 87, of Gonzales, died Saturday, December 7, 2002. He was born May 23, 1915 in Gonzales County to the late Otto and Lena Baenzinger Ehrig, of Germany and Switzerland, respectively.

He was a life long member of the First United Methodist Church in Gonzales and had been the church treasurer for 37 years. He served on a number of boards and committees for the church and had been a Bible school teacher for many years. He was also president of the Germania District Chapter #60 for over 58 years as well as a district director for a combined tenure of 44 years. He held all offices of the Hermann Sons Lodge #175 of which he had been a long standing member. He worked for many years with Iley and Sons Poultry and Supply, the Gonzales Elevator Co., Scheske Wholesale Grocery and owned and operated Ehrig Insurance in Gonzales. He also did personal tax returns for many years and was dutifully completing some tax returns upon his death.

Survivors include his wife, Alma Eleanor Breitschopf Ehrig, whom he married on April 23, 1942 in Gonzales; two sons, David Lee and wife Glenda Ehrig of Durango, Colorado and Kenneth Dale and wife Nancy Ehrig of Austin; one sister, Gertrude Iley of Georgewest; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Jacque Ehrig; six brothers, Wally, Alvin, Oscar, Bert Sr., Hugo and Raymond Ehrig.

Funeral services were held at the First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, December 10, 2002 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jay Brown officiating. Burial followed at the Hermann Sons Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Steve Ehrig, Tom Iley, Phil Roeber, Bo Ehrig, Phil Breitschopf, David Baenzinger, George Iley Jr. and Bobby Scheske.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Gonzales or the Gonzales Memorial Hospital.

Seydler-Hill Funeral Home of Gonzales was in charge of arrangements.
