Man jailed for throwing bike at police

GONZALES – A local man faces felony charges after police said he assaulted his father and got into an altercation with police that culminated in him throwing a tricycle at them.

At 1:17 p.m. Feb. 18, Officers Dewey Sumner and Leopoldo Mendez were dispatched to the 1900 block of Denton St. in reference to an assault in progress, Capt. Allen Taylor reported. Dispatch informed the officers that a man identified as 22-year-old William Curtis Leal was beating his father.

Upon arrival officers spotted Leal on the front porch of the residence with his hands behind his back. When police demanded Leal show his hands he refused, Taylor said.

Leal yelled to officers that they would have to shoot him, Taylor said. Leal then lifted a bicycle and hurled it at Sumner, but missed.

Officers said Leal was behaving erratically, yelling, cursing and threatening to charge at them. When ordered to get down on the ground he refused, and police drive-stunned him – but to no effect. Leal then picked up a tricycle and threw it at the officers, but missed.

Officers then pepper sprayed Leal, which also had no effect, Taylor said. A brief struggle ensued before officers were able to apprehend Leal, and he was arrested and charged with assault family violence, resisting arrest and assault on a public servant.
