GONZALES — What started as a routine traffic stop ended with two men going to jail after police said they were caught with meth and drug paraphernalia.

At 9:50 a.m. June 21, Sgt. Bethany McBride saw a tan four-door car traveling south on Moore St., Captain Allen Taylor reported. McBride noticed the passenger was not wearing a seatbelt and initiated a traffic stop.

The car pulled into the Conoco parking lot on St. Louis Street and McBride identified the driver as Chad Hughes, 35, and the passenger as Jackie Stewart, 31— both of Gonzales. McBride noted that Stewart appeared nervous, and that Stewart owned the car but since his license was expired, he had asked Hughes to drive.

After getting permission to search Stewart, McBride found a glass pipe used for smoking narcotics. A search of the car led to the discovery of two clear plastic bags containing meth, as well as a cup containing meth residue. Also found was a makeshift pipe containing meth residue.

Hughes and Stewart were arrested and taken to Gonzales County Jail, charged with possession of a controlled substance in a drug-free zone.
