Hotel Alcalde plans unveiled

GONZALES – The old Alcalde Hotel at 614 St. Paul downtown, along with a companion restaurant, is scheduled for a $1.68 million upgrade and a planned opening in March.

Former State Rep. Rick Green has applied to the Economic Development Corp. for an $840,700 loan/grant for half the cost of restoring the old building.

The EDC accepted the application but has not approved it. EDC Director Carolyn Gibson-Baros said the application opens a 60-day comment period before EDC can act. It would then also need the City Council’s blessing before it can proceed.

If approved, the city contribution would be matched by an equal contribution of cash and equipment furnished by the owners plus conventional financing.

Green said he plans a “first class gem in the heart of downtown Gonzales” with an opening planned March 4.

Total project cost $1,681,400.

The application said the hotel is projected to generate $28,000 per month and the restaurant $24,000 per month.

“The growth of the city of Gonzales is important to the owners of the Hotel Alcalde,” Green said in his application. “We want to be part of that growth, contributing to the hospitality industry’s attraction in Gonzales.”

He said he expects visitors to bring revenue to the city and, if their experience is enjoyable, it will help promote it to others.
