Gonzales PD cautions citizens of IRS scam

Posted

A scam has been going on where the caller identifies themselves as an officer with the Internal Revenue Service. The caller advises that you had filed returns with the IRS with miscalculations and that you owe IRS taxes and that if you don’t settle the debt an officer with the Sheriff’s Office will come to your door with an arrest warrant for you.

The caller then advises if you want to settle the debt in or outside of courthouse. If you choose to handle at the courthouse you would have to hire an attorney and go to Washington to pay the balance due or that the amount could be paid by electronic funds transfer and will instruct you to stay on the phone with them while going to your bank to withdraw the money and when you have the cash in hand at that time they will instruct you where to go to send the cash usually either by wire transfer or placing the monies onto Green Dot Cards and providing the caller with the password information from the wire transfer or to provide them with the numbers on the Green Dot Cards.

This is a scam so please beware and DO NOT provide these callers with any personal information on yourself or any account information. If you receive a call of this type contact your local Law Enforcement.
