GG Steaks & Spirits is open and delicious

We had the great pleasure to dine at the new GG Steaks & Spirits, created, built and run by the Guerra Family Monday night. The restaurant has been a long time coming but the family persevered and is now ready to share this gem with all of Gonzales and beyond.

The dining room itself is decorated in calming cream and white colors. We were greeted by very friendly staffers who sat us in a comfortable booth. Immediately we met Maria, our delightful server for the night who offered us fresh bread and sweet creamy butter.

The three of us selected different starters, but we tried them all. The tomato soup was creamy with hints of fresh thyme. It was delicious. We also had a tomato salad with bits of black olive and edible flowers that was almost too pretty to eat. A deft hand created that plate which shows the artistry and care that the kitchen staff possesses.

Our third salad was a refreshing and simple mixed organic greens salad but we loved the halved okra sitting on top.

We moved onto appetizers and there was a wide variety to choose from, fresh oysters to wild boar bruschetta, which was meaty and comforting. We also enjoyed a quail appetizer with corn. They have several other small plates that should please any palate.

One of us had the perfectly cooked salmon atop rice and asparagus spears. The salmon was topped with a pistachio pesto that was a nice enhancement to the fish.

Beef was the choice for my dining partners with a ribeye and a filet mignon, both cuts ample, with the meat cooked a perfect medium rare. It’s unusual and wonderful for a restaurant to get three specific temperature requests and to nail all three. There is a lot of talent in the kitchen at GG’s. Our sides included a fantastic rosemary roasted white and purple fingerling potatoes and well-seasoned asparagus.

Speaking of the talented kitchen, we met Desiree, the pastry chef who has been making desserts for years. She is a local, graduated high school here and then went to Escoffier Culinary School in Austin. Gonzales is blessed to have her back creating her unbelievably delicious desserts here in town. Her three-layer, flourless chocolate cake with a rich and perfectly sweet chocolate mousse on top, with a third layer of white chocolate cream was as perfect a dessert as anyone can ask for. Being flourless, it creates a gluten free dessert for those restricted diners. She had drops of a fruity and floral raspberry coulis around the dessert and told me she’d added honey to it, which created the unique floral notes to the sauce.

Isn’t it wonderful that Gonzaleans no longer have to drive long distances for gourmet food in a beautiful setting, all served to you by friendly and professional staff?

Make reservations today and I promise your stomach will thank you.

GG’s also has rooms available for bigger events, a bar and will have an outdoor dining area with live music soon. They are located at 216 Middle Buster Road, next to the Holiday Inn, or call them to make a reservation at 830-519-0002.
