GONZALES  —  A local man was arrested last week after allegedly breaking into a home and stealing a computer, officials said.

At 11:23 a.m. Feb. 13, Officer Dustin Kincaid was dispatched to the 1600 block of St. Peter St. in reference to a burglary in progress, Capt. Allen Taylor reported. The caller said the suspect was a tall, thin black male seen fleeing eastbound on Qualls St. While searching the area police received a call saying the suspect’s name was Daniel Porter, who lived in the 1500 block of Hamilton St.

Taylor and Lt. Tammy West arrived at the address and spotted Porter, 40, at the back door of the residence and tried to speak with him, but Porter shut the door behind him. Taylor and West entered the home, following the fleeing man with Kincaid joining the pursuit. Officers briefly lost sight of Porter before finding him in a nearby shed.

Porter was arrested and taken to Gonzales County Jail. He is charged with burglary of a habitation. The stolen property was reported as an “Asus” tablet computer which has not yet been recovered.
