Tank explosion rocks Cheapside

CHEAPSIDE — After roughly three hours of fighting an oilfield fire in the Cheapside area Monday, Gonzales County Fire Dept. was able to extinguish a blaze that had burned two fiberglass oil tanks and destroyed a truck.

“We heard there were injuries in the fire, but I don’t know their extent,” Fire Capt. Wade Zella reported.

A witness at the scene described hearing two large explosions, which apparently destroyed at least two holding tanks and a nearby welding truck.

Multiple attempts to reach Devon Energy officials Monday and Tuesday were unsuccessful. Officials from McMahan Welding in Cuero, who had contractors working at the site, declined to comment.
