Fire engulfs dump truck on Highway 183

A dump truck that had broken down on U.S. Highway 183 about 10 miles south of Gonzales caught fire Thursday evening and was destroyed.

According to Henry Cooper of Performance Paving at the scene, the driver of the northbound truck was hauling limestone when the vehicle lost its drive shaft. By the time a tow truck arrived and the hood of the truck was raised to investigate about 5:30 p.m., smoke was coming from the engine area.

The smoke soon became a fire, which fully engulfed the cab of the truck.

Firefighters from Gonzales were dispatched to battle the blaze, but encountered problems reaching the site because of traffic backed up on the highway. Gonzales County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to handle traffic control.

No one was reported injured in the fire.

By 6:30 p.m., the fire was declared out and the highway reopened.
