GONZALES — No serious injuries were reported after an ambulance and a car collided in the downtown area and damaged a historical monument and street sign, the Texas Highway Patrol reported.

At 8:50 p.m. Tuesday, a 2013 Ford EMS ambulance driven by Paul Thistlethwaite, 42, of San Antonio, was on an emergency call when it collided with a 2011 white Chevrolet car driven by Augustine Martinez, 21, of Ottine.

The ambulance— with emergency lights and siren activated— was southbound on St. Joseph toward the St. Lawrence intersection. Martinez was driving east on St. Lawrence approaching the same intersection, officials said.

Thistlethwaite entered the intersection, then veered left as Martinez entered the intersection, and they collided. The ambulance’s front right fender struck the Chevy’s left front quarter. After impact, the ambulance’s momentum carried it southeast over a curb, causing it to strike a historical monument. It continued onto St. Lawrence, where it came to a stop facing northeast in the eastbound lane.

Martinez continued southeast over a curb, hitting a street sign before veering into the northbound lane of St. Joseph — where it came to a stop facing southwest.

Officials said Martinez was at fault for failing to yield to the right of way of the ambulance. At the time the report was released, no citation had been written.

Sylvia Martinez, 50, of Gonzales and the Chevy’s passenger, was reported to have possible injuries, but refused medical treatment. No other injuries were reported.
