Wyatt shoots for the stars in The Son

Glori Wyatt was looking for something different to do.

When she found “that something,” it was one of the coolest things she has done in her life.

Wyatt, who has served as an administrative assistant to the sheriff the past three years, was chosen to play an extra in the filming of The Son in Gonzales last week. She not only found the experience “thrilling,” she couldn’t believe her luck in getting to be one of the few locals chosen to play a part in the shooting.

“A friend of mine saw the casting call that the Chamber of Commerce had posted and told me about it,’’ Wyatt said in her office last week. “I checked it out and saw I perfectly fit the description of the type of woman they were looking for so I decided to send my name in.

“I didn’t really know what to expect, but within a matter of minutes the production company e-mailed me back and told me they were interested! I was so excited! They told me I had to plan on being available for a couple of days in November. I checked with the sheriff, and he was totally supportive of me and for that I am really grateful. I was walking on air I think.”

From there, it was a hurry-up-and-wait type of experience.

“I had to go up to Austin to be fitted for my wardrobe, or dress rather,” Wyatt smiled. “That was fun, and they told me they would be in touch letting me know what to do or where to be when the filming started. Then the communication stopped.”

“I started to get worried,” Wyatt laughed. “It was getting close to the filming date, but I had not heard anything. I contacted them, but didn’t get in touch with anyone.

“The night before they were supposed to start shooting here in Gonzales, I still had not heard from anyone. I was crushed and thought it was not going to happen.

“Then I got an email in the middle of the night telling me to be on the set. I called the production company, told them I would be there but had to drop my kids off at school first.

“So I rushed downtown to wardrobe, and then they did my hair in a room filled with guys who dressed as soldiers. They just stared at me, and I really felt self-conscious. But then they went out to film their scene and I sat in there all morning. Then in the afternoon, it was my turn.”

Wyatt says she played an extra in a couple of street scenes, but the highlight was when she walked in front of Pierce Brosnan in a small scene.

“I looked up and there he was,” she laughed. “I was kind of in a daze and then they had to reshoot the scene. But it was fun, and it is something I will never forget.”

Upon reflection, Wyatt said, “I’m really glad that I had the opportunity to do this, because nobody around here gets that type of opportunity. I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

Wyatt said the Sheriff’s Department has been really supportive, and have teased her quite a bit, by asking her for an autograph. She thinks it’s funny, and is looking forward to seeing the final version.
