An oilfield worker lost his life Wednesday morning when he fell 50 feet onto a steel floor.

According to a report from Sgt. Matt Atkinson with Gonzales County Sheriff’s Office, Jose Govea, 33, of El Campo, sustained fatal injuries when he slipped while doing some service work on a drilling rig.

The rig, which belongs to EOG Resources and is known as Patterson Rig 235, is located on County Road 192 near Cheapside.

“He was one of the derrick service hands who went up about 50 feet where they were moving some pipe,” said Gonzales County Sheriff Glen Sachtleben. “He suddenly slipped and fell and hit the steel floor.”

The Sheriff’s Office is still gathering information about the accident.

Gonzales County EMS & Rescue crews responded to another oil rig accident Thursday afternoon when a worker suffered unknown injuries from an apparent fall at a derrick off County Road 289 near U.S. Highway 183 South.

At about 4 p.m., emergency crews received a 9-1-1 call to the work site. As responders arrived at the site, the worker had regained consciousness and was responding to fellow workers, but EMS personnel had to climb 25 feet to the rig flooring to provide medical assistance.

There was no report about the condition of the man.
