Wildcats remain unbeaten up top district

MOULTON — The Waelder Wildcats (9-0) continue to take control of District 30-1A after beating their rivals, the Moulton Bobkatz, on the road 61-43. In their last matchup, Moulton had a late fourth-quarter surge, but the Wildcats were able to withstand it, ending the game with a 15-point victory. On Tuesday, there was no late surge as the Wildcats maintained a comfortable lead throughout the second half.

“I think it was just learning from the last game, what we gave up,” David Graves said of the adjustments made.

Up 16-10 to start the second quarter, the Wildcats outscored Moulton 14-7 to go up 13 by half. By the end of the third, the Wildcats’ lead increased to 19 points, then down to 18 to end the game.

The win completes a season sweep against a Moulton team that swept the Wildcats last year, an important goal Graves and his senior class had this year.

“For my seniors, this is everything,” Graves said. “Last year Moulton beat them three times by a total of eight points. Our seniors didn’t forget that. They remember that. They wanted this.”

Colby Thorne led scoring with 17 points followed by Isaiah Miller with 15. Jacovan Fields added 14, Orlando Ford had eight, Ryan Valdirez had three and Junior Satterwhite and Alex Ford each had two points.

Even with the win, Graves believes the team can improve, specifically on offense when they’re in the lead.

“We got to start getting back to having more patience on offense with the lead,” he said. “That starts with me. We got to emphasize that a lot more. I tell my guys all the time, ‘I’m going to get mad if you don’t shoot when you’re open.’ And that’s every kid’s dream, to hear that from a coach. That starts with me. We got to get back to being more patient and we did that in the fourth quarter, about the four-minute mark.”

After the game, Graves wanted to emphasize his thanks to the Moulton Bobkatz for their hospitality Tuesday.

“I wanted to say thank you for Moulton for having us, they’re a great team, I appreciate their hospitality,” he said.

Waelder hosts Fayetteville on Friday before traveling to McDade next Tuesday to continue district play.
