Week 5: I think I’m going to thrive!

Posted

As I enter my fifth week as publisher of the Gonzales Inquirer, I want to reach out and thank the community for being so willing to help me find my way around.

Some of you may know my husband moved down a year ago, but my daughter and I are newbies to Gonzales. We completed our move this past weekend and are still house hunting but our belongings now live in Gonzales Self Storage.

Let me start by saying what a jewel we have in the Crystal Theatre! Our daughter spent two weeks working on a production with total strangers and by opening night they were a cohesive group of talented kids that learned monologues, dance moves and blocking. I would have guessed they’d spent weeks in rehearsals, not ten days. Not only did she work well together with the other actors, but she has made friends that attend the school she will be starting next week. They’ve given her tips on the bus rides, the delicious lunches she will get and how the gym has no air conditioning. The ladies that volunteer their time to teach these kids are ridiculously talented and generous with their time. I urge the community to go to any production the Crystal puts on, they don’t even charge people to see the shows.

I’ve had the occasion to attend both the Noon Lions Club and the Rotary Club meetings, engaged, amusing and friendly business people in Gonzales who want to be of service. From friendly softball games to canned food drives to fundraisers for school kids, we are lucky to have these service organizations in our neighborhood. Coming up there are opportunities to help at the local food pantry and soup kitchen. We are running a calendar weekly of meetings the public can attend, the more we get involved the better the community becomes.

Altruism is alive and well in Gonzales and I’m delighted to be included in some upcoming events.

We have a robust chamber of commerce and economic development corporation, as well as a hard working Main Street Gonzales board, all people wanting to make Gonzales a must-see destination, not only for Texas history lovers but for anyone looking to enjoy all that Gonzales offers, even Pokemon Go hunters.

I’ve met artists, mushroom farmers, musicians, chefs, morticians and bankers, everyone as friendly as the next. I’ve met our mayor and school superintendent, the hospital CEO and the veteran that runs the VFW, all wonderful citizens of our community.

I’ll keep you posted on how my next five weeks turn out. Remember, I want to hear your stories, stop by the office or send me an email. You are an interesting lot and I love to hear about your lives.

Finally, I have to thank my committed, hard-working staff, José, Shelly, Debbie, Rob, Erik and Sanya, all different people that come together every weekday with one purpose; to produce the best local newspaper they can. They’ve helped me to find my way around town and share their knowledge with me daily. Thoughtful and smart, stories about locals written by locals; there is a reason why the Gonzales Inquirer has been around for 163 years and I’m proud to be a part of its rich lineage.
