WAELDER — The Lady Wildcats came away with a win Friday after taking down McDade High (25-15, 25-13, 25-15).

“The girls put together an OK three games,” head coach Martha Zuniga said. “Not the strongest, there are some things we still need to work on.”

Fortunately for Waelder, McDade (who opened its doors just this year) were unable to serve receive as the Lady Wildcats notched in multiple aces.

“We cleaned it up on the serving, had some good serves,” Zuniga noted. “Our passing looked a little better, we just aren’t used to getting into our positions right away. They played an overall good game.”

In the first set, players like Ashlynn Noyola, Kashanna Durst and Brejhai Montgomery scored their points on serves. Honesty Fields also came away with a pair of kills as well as a tip as Waelder overwhelmed McDade.

“Honesty came out big for us and had a few kills,” Zuniga said. “Our libero, Ke’Shaya [Moore], she did a really good job too.”

In the second and third sets, the Lady Cats continued taking advantage of McDade’s errors, as Malorie Puente served in 10 straight points before finally McDade scored to cut the run in the second.

“Malorie [Puente], Honesty [Fields] and Kashanna [Durst] all did well serving, those definitely stuck out in my mind,” Zuniga said. “Our setter, Ashlynn Noyola, did a heck of a job getting the ball up there.”

Despite the easy win, Zuniga did see aspects of their game that needed to be cleaned up.

“Right now we’re still going to focus on positioning on the court,” she said. “[We’re] still going to focus on our serving and our passing, those are two things that you could never practice enough of.”

Waelder travels Friday for their next game as they take on Fayetteville at 5 p.m.
