Waelder falls to state-ranked Moulton

The Waelder girls basketball team dropped 68-11 to rival Moulton Friday, Jan. 10. The young Lady Wildcats struggled from the beginning to adapt to state-ranked Moulton’s full court press defense, falling into 25-2 hole at the end of first quarter. Waelder never got up to speed offensively, scoring the bulk of their 11 total points in the third quarter after Moulton’s defensive pressure backed off.

Coach Rachel Tucker credited the blowout loss to an unexperienced and limited roster. The Lady Cats only have a roster of eight players and three of those are seniors as opposed to Moulton’s much deeper roster.

“We hurt ourselves by throwing the ball away and trying to pass over and all the things we talk about not doing,” Tucker said. “With experience, those mistakes will come off. They now have somebody to show them this is a better way to do it and we need to practice doing it a better way. It’s going to take time, it’s a process.”

Tucker still highlighted the team’s effort as a high point of the tough loss.

“I think their desire is there,” Tucker said. “They never quit, they were down 50, 60 points and they didn’t stop.”

Leading the Lady Wildcats in scoring was Jakhia Thompson with four points, Maely Bracamontes with three points and Yesica Ramos also with three points.
