Torres Tackles: Is ‘history in the making’ enough?

Posted

When you read the game report for the Apaches win over Little River Academy on this page (if you haven’t reached there, spoiler alert, Gonzales won 6-0) you’ll notice I used the phrase “history in the making” right at the start of the story.

It’s kind of hard for a team that’s playing their second ever season to not be making history but nonetheless that phrase is something I’ve heard other people say out loud, so I wrote it.

But is making history enough for support? Reading that sounds as silly as writing it, trust me, but this Friday we’ll truly see just how much the community is behind the Gonzales boys’ soccer team.

That’s right, another mark in the “history in the making” box, the Apaches will be hosting their first-ever playoff game this Friday at Apache Field, with kickoff set at 7:15 p.m. For those wanting to attend, tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for students.

And you should want to attend, by the way. As I’ve said now for the third time this column, this is history in the making.

Think about this. The Apaches who have never had a soccer team before 2014 are in the area playoff round in their second year of existence. This season was their first ever playoff eligible season as they were placed in a district alongside Taylor, Giddings, Smithville, La Grange and Cameron Yoe. During their first ever district season the Apaches lost just one game, a 1-0 decision to Giddings. Both teams were named district co-champions.

Again, the Apaches, in their second season ever and their first in a district were named district co-champions. That’s remarkable.

The home crowd certainly has grown since last season. I remember looking into the crowd and seeing just one section fill up during its inception. This season I’ve seen more and more. I’m hoping this Friday the stands are filled. I’ve written before about home-field advantage and how that’s very much a real thing in high school sports. So why not join in on the fun this Friday and be a part of history (OK, I think four times writing that is enough)?

If you can’t go, what’s the excuse? Hopefully it doesn’t involve something like “well I don’t understand soccer.” There are plenty of people who attend the football games that don’t understand what’s going on, yet still cheer on their Apaches. I hear it all the time when someone yells “come on ref that’s a flag” when clearly it wasn’t (I kid). But seriously, the experience of watching a soccer game live is one that can’t be missed, especially one of this caliber.

The Apaches will take on the Bandera Bulldogs Friday at Apache Field. They’ve met before with Gonzales taking the 3-2 win earlier in the season. With your help, the Apaches can repeat this performance and maybe improve on it with a bigger win.

Who knows? It’s sports, anything can happen.

What I do know is this Friday at Apache Field, do you really want to miss out on history?
