Sue Lue Kelly, 87, of Gonzales, passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2019. Sue was born June 27, 1932 in Gonzales to Ernest E. Smith, Jr. and Sue Harris Smith. Sue married James Patrick Kelly, Jr. on December 23, 1954 in Gonzales. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, and the Music Club.

Sue grew up in Gonzales and graduated from Gonzales High School in 1950. Having been a motivated student and active within many clubs, Sue went on to graduate from Southern Methodist University. She taught in the Gonzales school system for a few years before diving in full time as a wife, mother and homemaker. As time permitted in raising two children and all that such entails, Sue enjoyed painting. She loved to capture scenic views of Gonzales County on canvas as well as the details and colors of flowers. Sue passionately enjoyed the arts; she was a delightful pianist and organist and often filled her home with music as she sat to play. Cooking was another gift she loved to share. Sue was a fine cook and had once won a blue ribbon for her pecan pie. She found a sense of well-being tending to her shrubs, trees and house plants and if that didn’t work, she loved to shop. Sue enjoyed dressing nice and buying clothes for her daughter Carolyn. She had to really work to get her son Jimmy to go shopping for school clothes, but eventually he would reluctantly succumb to his mom’s strong will and begrudgingly try-on each and every article of clothing to check for fit and comfort.

Sue treasured going out for dinner with her husband. These were quiet moments where they could share time and conversation alone. Later, it was coffee with her friends at D.Q. and ruminating the goings-on in Gonzales. She loved her family deeply and cherished time with her grandson and great-grandchildren. Nothing pleased Sue more than to be surrounded by her great-grandchildren listening to all their wonderful stories and capturing the vibrant sparkles in their youthful eyes. All this brought a warm smile to her loving heart.

Sue Lue Kelly is survived by her adoring family, daughter, Carolyn Kelly Cross, son, Jimmy Kelly both of Gonzales, grandson and his wife, Zach and Dawn Cross of Gonzales. great-grandchildren, J.C. Cross, Bennet Cross, Hunter Cross and Cassidy Cross and her brother and sister-in-law, Ernest E. Smith, III and Paula of Austin. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
