Striders to send 10 to Junior Olympics

After competing at the AAU South Texas Regional meet at Converse last week, 10 Gonzales athletes have qualified for the 2018 AAU Junior Olympics to be held at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa from July 30 – Aug. 4.
Getting top marks at their respective events were Kea’Anna White in shot put and turbo javelin, Kea’Anna White in shot put and turbo javelin, Jaliyah Jackson in shot put and turbo javelin, Veronica Moreno in the 1500-meter and 3000-meter races, Haley Garza in the 1500 meter, Jermane Upshaw in shot put and turbo javelin, Lil’Nika James in turbo javelin, Kamren Cavit in javelin, Avionna Houston in the 1500-meter and turbo javelin, Keith White in turbo javelin and Makayla Smith in the turbo javelin.
A tentative schedule has been released for the Junior Olympics, though start times could be adjusted based on event registrations.

o Kea’Anna White – shot put
• 3 p.m.
o Jaliyah Jackson – shot put
Tuesday, July 31:
• 8 a.m.
o Veronica Moreno – 1,500 meter
o Haley Garza – 1,500 meter
• 3 p.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 1:
• 8 a.m.
o Lil’Nika James – turbo javelin
• Noon
o Kamren Cavit – javelin
Thursday, Aug. 2:
• 8 a.m.
o Avionna Houston – 1,500 meter
o Keith White – turbo javelin
• Noon
o Kea’Anna White – turbo javelin
Friday, Aug. 3:
• 8 a.m.
o Jermane Upshaw – turbo javelin
• Noon
o Avionna Houston – turbo javelin
o Jaliyah Jackson – turbo javelin
Saturday, Aug. 4
• 8 a.m.
o Veronica Moreno – 3,000 meter
• 11:30 a.m.
o Makayla Smith – turbo javelin
The G-Town Striders are hosting a bake sale and a barbecue plate fundraiser at the Walmart parking lot on Saturday, July 7, to help raise money to send the Striders to Iowa. The team will have rib boats and whole rib slabs for sale.
