Nixon-Smiley tied for third in District 27-3A

Nixon-Smiley is rolling. After dropping three straight to fall to 1-4, the Mustangs are now in a five-game winning streak, besting Stockdale 13-2 last Friday and Yoakum 6-5 on Monday. The baseball squad have outscored their opponents 56-13 during this winning streak.

In their first matchup on March 13, the result was much closer, a 6-5 win for Nixon-Smiley. Last Friday was a bit different as the Mustangs run-ruled the Brahmas 13-2 in a five-inning bout. Xavier Arias pitched all five innings, taking the win with six strikeouts, five hits, one hit batter and one earned run.
Arias also went 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring three runs and coming away with two RBIs. Jason Yell went 2-for-4 with two runs, two stolen bases and one RBI. Colby Newman went 2-for 4 with two runs and a stolen base.

Nixon-Smiley 6, Yoakum 5 (F-10 innings)
It took extra innings to get there, but the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs were able to match the Yoakum Bulldogs run-for-run until a walk-off hit by Santos Pompa in the 10th plated Jason Yell for the 6-5 win against the Yoakum Bulldogs.
Three pitchers took to the mound Monday night, with Ricky Flores getting the start. He pitched seven innings, striking out four batters while giving up seven hits, one hit batter and one earned run. Pompa pitched one inning, allowing two earned runs in the eighth, one hit and one walk. The Mustangs matched Yoakum’s two runs in the eighth to force another extra inning.
Sean Villanueva was awarded the win, pitching two innings and striking out one batter.
At the plate, Colby Newman went 2-for-5 with one run and a one stolen base. Xavier Arias went 1-for-4 with a double, one RBI, one run and one stolen base. Pompa’s lone hit of the night was the walk-off in the 10th.
Nixon-Smiley avenged their March 16 lost against Yoakum, a 3-0 tilt to the Bulldogs.

The Mustangs are now 6-4 in district, tied for third place. They take on Marion (9-1) on the road this Friday before hosting Hallettsville (9-1) on Monday. Both games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
