GONZALES — A Luling man was arrested after police said he and another suspect were caught passing stolen checks.

At 9:15 a.m. Aug. 30, Capt. Allen Taylor spoke with a Sage Capital Bank representative who said one of the bank’s customers was a victim of check theft. Some of the victim’s checks had been stolen and were passed other banks in Luling, Lockhart and San Marcos, Taylor said.

Along with sheriff’s deputies, Taylor conducted an investigation that led to the suspect being identified as Martin Ancelmo Valera-Olvera, 24, of Luling.

A warrant was issued for Olvera’s rest, and sheriff’s deputies have obtained warrants for another person believed to be involved in the case, Taylor said.

Also during the investigation Taylor learned from Sage Capital Bank saying Olvera and another suspect were seen at the San Marcos branch trying to pass stolen checks. Taylor contacted San Marcos police, who detained the suspects at the scene. Evidence was obtained that led to the arrest of the pair. Olvera was taken to Hays County Jail and charged with fraudulent use of identifying information, a second degree felony.
