State Highway 95 renamed

First responders from Gonzales and surrounding counties attended a ceremony on Wednesday that, thanks to state legislation, changed the name of State Highway 95 to the “Sergeant David M. Furrh Memorial Highway.”

In September, lawmakers passed SB 365, which allowed for the name change. Furrh was a former Gonzales County sheriff’s deputy who was killed in the line of duty on Dec. 6, 2000.

On Wednesday, a new sign was unveiled, dedicating a portion of SH 95 to the late sergeant just outside of Shiner.

Furrh’s son Michael, 32, who is director of emergency medical services for Colorado County, said he wanted to rename that stretch of road because that’s where his father raised him.

In addition to Gonzales police, county sheriff’s deputies and DPS troopers, several regional law enforcement agencies from the cities of Moulton, Columbus and Victoria were on hand as well as authorities from Lavaca, Colorado, Fayette and Victoria counties.

“This is the road I grew up on, so I thought it was only fitting that we change the name of the highway,” Michael said.
