Mustangs blank Sacred Heart at home

The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs took advantage of two big plays to beat Hallettsville Sacred Heart 19-0 last Friday. Xavier Arias scored on a five-yard run and later a 94-yard run in the second quarter. Then on defense, Mario Ponce return an interception for a 70-yard touchdown.

Offensively, Arias led the team in rushing, with 17 carries for 150 yards and two scores. Dario Jantes added seven carries for 81 yards. Jesse Riojas had 12 carries for 143 yards. Defensively, Chris Brown, Martin Moreno and Xavier Arias forced one fumble each, with Zac Perez and Mateo Abrego recovering one each. Brown also led the team in tackles with six solo and four assisted. Perez had five solo and five assisted. Ponce had two interceptions, one he returned for a touchdown.

Lady Apaches open district with loss

The Gonzales Lady Apaches traveled to La Vernia, losing in three sets to the state-ranked Lady Bears, (25-10, 25-21, 25-15). La Vernia is ranked sixth in Class 4A according to the Texas Girls Coaches Association. The Lady Apaches (1-0) host Cuero (0-1) Friday for a 6 p.m. match then travel to Geronimo to play the #18 Navarro Lady Panthers (2-0).

Shiner opens district with win

The Shiner Lady Comanches opened district with a four-set victory over Wallis Brazos, (23-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-22). Shiner has a bye on Friday, but then travels to take on their neighbors, the Shiner St. Paul Lady Cardinals, with the match set for 6 p.m.

Cardinals take down Austin Saints

Shiner St. Paul hosted the Austin Saints, beating them 29-21. Despite committing nine penalties in the game, the Cardinals were relatively clean, winning the turnover battle against the Saints.

Zak Johnson led the team in rushing with 26 carries for 136 yards and a score. Noeh Boedeker had 10 rushes for 46 yards and two touchdowns. Kai Giese added eight carries for 64 yards.

Lady Mustangs knock off Smithville

Nixon-Smiley beat the Smithville Lady Tigers in four sets, (25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 25-22). The Lady Mustangs host Lee Academy on Tuesday, Sept. 24 for a 6 p.m. game and later a District 27-3A matchup against Yoakum with a 5 p.m. game.

Luling dropped in four

Luling lost in four sets on the road against Marion last Friday, Sept. 13 (25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 26-15). The Lady Eagles have an open day on Friday, then travel to Austin to place Eastside with a scheduled 7 p.m. start.

Shiner sweeps Karnes City

Shiner swept Karnes City at home, (25-20, 25-14, 25-20). The Lady Comanches have a bye on Friday, then travel to take on Shiner St. Paul in a non-district game on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
