Senior Apache lifter places 6th in state
Senior powerlifter Jared “J.T.” Esparza placed sixth at the state powerlifting meet last weekend in the 242-pound weight class. Esparza squatted 540 pounds, bench pressed 365 pounds then dead lifted 610 pounds to total to 1,515 pounds. His total was 15 pounds better than his regional total of 1,500 pounds. Taking first was Tyler Chapel Hill’s Khristion Little who totaled 1,700. Bridge City’s Jack Fontenont also totaled 1,700. Taking third and fourth, respectively, were Burnet’s Roger Craig and Sweetwater’s Justin Casterno who also listed 1,615 pounds, Kingsville King’s Ismael Gonzalez lifted 1,580 to place fifth. Esparza bested Kennedale’s Cameron Hanna’s total lift of 1,500 pounds.
Luling powerlifter takes 2nd
Luling powerlifter Jonathyn Murry placed second in the superheavyweight weight class at the state powerlifting meet last weekend. Murry squatted 710 pounds, bench pressed 415 pounds and dead lifted 575 pounds to total to 1,700 pounds. Crawford’s Seth Kohlscheen placed first in the with class with a total of 1,800 pounds.
Apaches searching for a district win
The Apaches lost 10-3 last Friday, March 22 on the road against Pleasanton. Tanner Blundell took the loss, pitching 5.1 innings, striking out three batters while allowing eight hits, five earned runs, including a home run, and three walks. Freshman Jared Cook came in for relief, allowing three hits, two unearned runs and striking out one batter. Senior Larry Gomez led the team in hits, going 2-for-3 with two hits, two RBIs and a walk. Matthew Velasquez-Banda went 1-for-2 while Heath Henke went 1-for-3. Cook got an RBI going 0-for-2 with a walk.
On Tuesday, the Apaches hosted Navarro, losing 11-0. Gonzales (0-3) looks for their first district game as they host Cuero (3-0) on Friday for a 6:30 p.m. game before traveling to Poteet (0-3) on Tuesday.
Lady Apaches blow out Burton in non-district bout
The Gonzales Lady Apaches took down the Burton Panthers 17-2 at home on Friday, March 22. The Lady Apaches traveled to La Vernia on Tuesday, losing 10-4 to drop to 1-6 in district. The Lady Apaches host Cuero on Friday before traveling to Navarro on Tuesday.
Nixon-Smiley split district games
Nixon-Smiley opened district play with an 8-6 win over the Karnes City Badgers. Mustangs traveled to Yoakum, losing 5-0 to the Bulldogs. Nixon-Smiley (1-1) hosts Stockdale on Friday before traveling to Poth on Tuesday, April 2.
Luling lose close
The Luling Eagles opened District 27-3A with a 6-5 extra-innings loss against Yoakum on Friday, March 22. The Luling Eagles climbed their way out of an early 6-0 deficit on Tuesday to cut the lead to 7-6 by the end of the fifth inning, but would ultimately lose 9-7 to the Poth Tigers. The Eagles travel to Karnes City on Friday before hosting Stockdale on Tuesday, April 2.
Lady Mustangs blown out in district play
Nixon-Smiley lost 16-0 against Karnes City last Friday, March 22. The Lady Mustangs followed up with a 20-5 loss against Yoakum on Tuesday. In search of a district win, the Lady Mustangs travel to Karnes City on Friday before hosting Stockdale on Tuesday, April 2.
Lady Eagles lose in district
Luling lost 17-1 to Yoakum in District 27-3A softball last Friday, March 22. The Lady Eagles then took a 16-0 loss against Poth on Tuesday. They travel to Karnes City tomorrow before hosting Stockdale on Tuesday.
Cardinals unbeaten in district
Shiner St. Paul run-ruled Bulverde Living Rock 16-0 last Friday, March 22. They moved to 3-0 in TAPPS District 4 – Div. V after beating San Marcos Hill Country Christian 12-2. They take on Bulverde Bracken Christian on Friday. On Tuesday they host Victoria Faith Academy.
St. Paul Lady Cardinals blowing out district opponents
Shiner St. Paul bested their rivals, the Hallettsville Sacred Heart Indianettes in softball 11-0 last week. The Lady Cardinals game against Bellville Faith Academy was rescheduled to April 8. The Lady Cardinals host Sacred Heart on April 2.
