Lady Apaches golf team showing progress
The Gonzales Lady Apaches golf team showed growth this week, placing tied for 11th out of the 17 teams that competed in the New Braunfels golf meet on Monday. Last season, they finished with a total of 491 strokes, good for last place. On Monday, their score improved to 411. Kiley Allen medaled, taking fourth place among the 83 girls that competed.
Apaches boys soccer continue to roll
The Gonzales Apaches boys soccer team moved to 15-1-1 overall after defeating the Beeville Jones Trojans 4-0 at home on Tuesday. The Apaches travel to Boerne this Friday for a 7 p.m. non-district game.
Mustangs split games, winning first district game
Nixon-Smiley took a 50-43 loss last Friday, Jan. 31 against Yoakum. Brayden Martinez led the team in scoring with 13 points followed by Santos Pompa with 10, Jesse Riojas with nine, Zach Perez with six, Benito Perez with three and Mario Ponce with two. On Tuesday, the Mustangs finally got a win in district, defeating Stockdale 43-34. Zach Perez had 15 points, Santos Pompa, Jesse Riojas and Benito Perez each had six points while Brayden Martinez had five, Edgar Ochoa had four and Ruben Bomer had one point. The Mustangs travel to Poth this Friday before hosting Luling next Tuesday. Both games are scheduled to start near 8 p.m.
Lady Mustangs eliminated from playoff contention
The Lady Mustangs lost 56-27 against Yoakum last Friday, Jan. 31, then lost to Stockdale 48-35 on Tuesday to drop to 0-8 in district. Nixon-Smiley travels to #13 Poth (7-1) before hosting #16 Luling (7-1) next Tuesday to close out district play. The Lady Mustangs are mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.
District champs
The Shiner St. Paul Lady Cardinals clinched a district title after beating Victoria Faith Academy 42-27. Julianna Davis led the team in scoring with 11 points. Danni Blair had eight points while Rebecca Wagner had six points.
Luling Lady Eagles remain on top of district
The Luling Lady Eagles dropped down to #16 in the Class 3A girls basketball state poll after losing 52-50 against the now #13 Poth Pirates last Friday, Jan. 31. Aja Holmes led the team in scoring 33 points, going 13-26 from the field. She also had 12 rebounds, two assists, seven steals and two blocks in the game.
Luling then beat Karnes City 51-38 to keep pace with Poth (7-1) up top of District 27-3A at 7-1. The Lady Eagles host Stockdale (2-6) before traveling to Nixon to play the Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs (0-8). Tipoff is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. for both games.
Eagles add to win streak
Luling came away with a close 49-47 victory over Poth last Friday, Jan. 31. Two Eagles came away with double-doubles with Trenton Scott finishing the night with 14 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and two steals and Stanzant Jackson adding 10 points, 12 rebounds, one assist and one steal. Rashawn Macias led the team in scoring with 16 points, adding one rebound, one assist, three steals and two blocks to the stat sheet.
The Eagles knocked off Karnes City 46-39 to remain unbeaten in district. Macias led the team in scoring with 22 points, four rebounds, two assists and six steals. Jackson had a stellar night, adding four points, 19 rebounds and four steals.
Luling hosts Stockdale (3-3) before traveling to Nixon to play the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs (1-5). Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. for both games.
