GONZALES — Gonzales 7th and 8th grade students will now be given the option to take a class on sexual and relationship health after the Gonzales Independent School District board unanimously passed a resolution on Monday in a regular session, to implement the SHARE (Sexual Health and Relationship Education) program.
The program will “provide awareness and factual information for students grade seven and eight, relative to sexual and relationship health,” GISD Superintendent Dr. Kim Strozier said during the meeting.
“It’s based on a premise of teaching children factual information so that they can make choices that will be healthy choices for them as they move forward as young adults,” Strozier added. “It’s currently being presented for grades 7 and 8. It’s endorsed by surrounding superintendents that I’m familiar with. We’ve received recommendations regarding the program.”
According to the superintendent, the program wouldn’t just involve sexual health education. It also touches on relationship help as well as social media use.
In other news, the board passed all agenda items listed under new business/action items unanimously such as:
• Discuss and consider action to approve the annual financial and compliance report for fiscal year ended Aug. 31, 2017 and approve the audit engagement letter from Singleton, Clark & Company, PC
