Schedules affected after inclement weather forces schools to reschedule district games

Wildcats move up the rankings with district win
The Waelder Wildcats shot up from 25th in the TABC poll in Class 1A Boys’ Basketball to ninth, one slot above Moulton, after knocking off their rivals last Friday 43-40. The Wildcats’ game against Round Top-Carmine (1-0) was rescheduled due to inclement weather to Wednesday. Results were unavailable before press time. The Wildcats are set to host Fayetteville on Friday, Jan. 19, with tipoff scheduled at 6 p.m.

Mustangs lose on the road, Tuesday game rescheduled
A tough first quarter led to a 16-point loss on Friday, Jan. 12 as Nixon-Smiley lost 52-36 to the Hallettsville Brahmas (3-2). Jose Rodriguez (pictured) led the team in scoring with 19 points. The Mustangs dropped down to 1-4, tied with Luling for sixth. Nixon-Smiley’s game against Schulenburg (2-3) was rescheduled due to inclement weather and results of the game were unavailable before press time. Nixon-Smiley travel to take on Universal City Randolph (5-0) with tipoff set at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 19.

Lady Mustangs routed on the road
The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs took a loss on the road on Friday, Jan 12 at Hallettsville, losing 78-10 to drop to 0-7 in District 27-3A. Hallettsville rose to 5-2, tied for third with Schulenburg. Marion and Yoakum lead at 6-1. Due to inclement weather, the Lady Mustangs were unable to play their game on Tuesday against Schulenburg. Results to the rescheduled game were unable before deadline day. Nixon-Smiley travel to take on Universal City Randolph on Jan. 19.

Gonzales takes first district loss
The Gonzales Lady Apaches have had some early success in District 27-4A. Last Friday, they lost their first district game, a 62-46 tilt in favor of the La Vernia Lady Bears, who are currently ranked 24th in Class 4A girls according to the Texas Association Basketball Coaches weekly poll. Gonzales’ game against Wimberley (0-3) was rescheduled to today, Jan. 18, with varsity tipoff set at 5 p.m. They then take on San Antonio Veterans Memorial (3-0), ranked 20th in Class 4A, on the road Friday.

Apaches open district with loss
The Gonzales Apaches opened district with an 88-64 loss at home on Friday, Jan. 12. Their game against Wimberley (1-0) was rescheduled to today, Jan. 18, with varsity playing at 5 p.m. The Apaches then host San Antonio Veterans Memorial (0-1) on Friday, Jan. 19, with tipoff regularly scheduled at 6:30 p.m.

Waelder loses to state-ranked rivals
The Lady Wildcats lost a tough game against their state-ranked rivals, the Moulton Bobkittenz, 71-30. Waelder’s rescheduled game against Round Top-Carmine was set for Wednesday, though results were unavailable before press time. They host Fayetteville on Friday, with tipoff scheduled at 5 p.m.

Lady Apaches tie with Bandera
The Gonzales Lady Apaches drew with Bandera in a non-district game 1-1. The team was scheduled to take on Gateway College on Tuesday, but inclement weather forced a cancelation. Their next scheduled game is a district match at La Grange.

Cardinals continue district routs
Shiner St. Paul beat UC First Baptist Academy 53-17, as the Lady Cardinals outscored their opponents each quarter. Delynn Pesek led the team in scoring with 15 points. She added a team-leading eight rebounds to the stat sheet. Parker Clay came away with seven points, Kayla Kubenka had six, Riley Johnson had five points and Christine Wagner, Anna Adamek, Gracey Novosad and Grace Irvin each had four points. The team is now 2-0 in district.

Shiner St. Paul moves to 2-0
The Cardinals boys’ basketball team took down UC First Baptist 63-32 to move to 2-0 in district. Their next scheduled district game is on Jan. 19 against Victoria Faith Academy.

Gonzales 8th grade boys play tough, split games
The B team played a tough-fought game against Mountain Valley (Canyon Lake), losing 24-11. Isaac Villanueva was the leader in the scoring column with six points followed by Carson Gayton and DJ Longoria with two points. Closing out the scoring was Johnathan Tejeda with one point.
The A team played a great all-around game, taking down the Hawks 49-23. The Apaches started out the game with a 17-1 run. The team played “an awesome game on both ends of the floor,” coaches said. Brady Barfield and Xavier Aguayo had a standout job on defense. Leading scorer was Aguayo with 16 points, followed by Jeremiah Hastings with 10 points. Barfield had eight points, Jalen Miller had six, Fabien Ramirez ended with four, Brett Breitschopf had three points and closing out the scoring was Jacob Bakken with two points.
