Sandy Howell

Sandy Howell may have been petite in stature, but she had a huge personality and a huge heart.

Sandy was born in Chicago on May 4, 1946 and died peacefully at her home in Gonzales on June 30, 2016. Her parents were Virginia (Harris) and Roger Cone and her beloved step-father, C.V. Jones.

Sandy grew up in Montgomery, Ala., and later moved to Gonzales. Over the years, Sandy worked at Coca Cola, was the technical director of Southern Clay, the assistant purchasing manager at Warm Springs Rehab Hospital and the customer service director of the Gonzales Community Health Center. She said her dearest job of all, however, was being a mom, a grandmother, and caring for her mother during the final years of her mother’s life.

In 1972, she married Donald David Howell of Gonzales. From the moment they were together, she made herself a permanent part of the Howell family. The Howell family has always felt the same way about her. Together, Donald David and Sandy raised two wonderful sons, Shane Howell of Austin and Bobby Joe Howell of Gonzales.

She married Rick Dawson in 1991 and had many adventures with him. They remained good friends over the years.

In 2008, Sandy became a proud grandmother with the birth of her granddaughter, Elise, of Austin. One of Sandy’s favorite things to do was to spend time with Elise and play dress up with her.

Sandy always had a huge heart. She showed so much love for the people in her life and would be the first to nurse an orphaned or injured animal back to health or adopt a stray.

She made everyone feel like the most loved person in the room. She had a soft spot for kids and animals — especially German Shepherds. Later in life, Sandy fell in love with Jamaica and looked forward to regular visits there.

She is survived by her beloved sons, granddaughter, and many nieces, nephews and other family and countless friends.

The family would like to thank Terry Tuch and Sandy Starr for the loving care given to Sandy during her illness. Thanks also to Accolade hospice for their help during the last month.

Come celebrate her life at services at 10 a.m. on July 6 at Eastside Baptist Church in Gonzales where — thanks to the festive VBS decorations — she will “sail” to her permanent home! Memorials may be sent to Eastside Baptist Church.
