Robert Page Remschel, Jr., of Fredericksburg passed away on Monday, September 19, 2016, at the age of 54.

Robert was born August 21, 1962, in Austin, TX and grew up in Gonzales, TX, where he graduated from high school in 1981. He played basketball for the Gonzales Apaches while in high school and worked at his family’s lumber company starting in the 7th grade.

Robert attended Southwest Texas State University and graduated with a BS in Physical Education and Health in 1986.

Robert married the love of his life, Valerie, on June 4, 1988, and they celebrated their 28th anniversary this year. Robert worked at Nixon-Smiley ISD from 1989-2000 as an elementary P.E. teacher and he coached all sports at the junior high and high school. He moved his family to Fredericksburg in 2000 and worked for Fredericksburg ISD until he retired in May 2016. He was head basketball coach for the Battlin’ Billie girls from 2006-2008. He also coached girls’ track and football.

Robert was a parishioner of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church and enjoyed meeting and greeting people as part of the Hospitality ministry of the church.

Robert was a loving father and he loved all of the activities his children were involved in. He encouraged his sons in scouting and was proud that they both attained the ranking of Eagle Scout. He enjoyed going to watch the plays his son David performed in. He loved fishing with his son Richard and cheering for him on the Billie basketball and tennis teams. He attended most of his daughter Robyn’s swim meets and could easily be heard above the crowd encouraging her as she swam. He was proud as he watched his daughter Cory in her mascot uniform and as she danced with the Red-Hotts. He joined all of his family in cheering on the Longhorns. He also loved  vacations at the family beach house at Magnolia Beach.

Robert grew up playing guitar and bass guitar with his father and his friends and was part of a band called Contraband with high school friends. In the last few years, he played with a group every Wednesday night and also played with the Bill Nash band.

Robert was known as the “deer whisperer” of the Zeder Strausse neighborhood as all the deer would gather in his year each evening for feeding.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Valerie (Walshak) Remschel; his children, David Russell Remschel and his wife Tasha; his son Richard; his twin daughters Robyn and Cory; his father Robert Remschel; his sister Natalie Bowman and her husband, Bill; brother Daryl and his wife Charlotta; brother Alex and his wife Sandy as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving friends.

Serving as pallbearers were Quentin Smith, Wade Prejean, Shannon Petsch, Bennie Rathke, James McNabb, Danny Vana, Darrell Bennet, and John Boothe. Honorary pallbearers were the St. Mary’s Men’s ACTs team.

Visitation was held Thursday evening, September 22, at the St. Mary’s Church and was followed by a rosary service. The funeral service was at St. Mary’s Church on Friday, September 23 at 4:00. Graveside services will be held in Gonzales at the St. James Catholic Cemetery on Saturday, September 24 at 10:30.
