Toliver wins Dem sheriff primary

The race to determine who will be the Republican nominee for Gonzales County sheriff will head to a runoff. Incumbent Sheriff Matthew Atkinson was the top vote getter in the race March 3 election and narrowly missed out on securing a plurality by obtaining 47.54% of the vote. 50% of the vote plus one is needed to win an election outright.

Atkinson will square off against Robert Ynclan in the runoff who finished second with 34.64% of the vote. Allen Taylor finished third in the Republican sheriff primary securing 17.82% of the vote.

In the Democratic sheriff primary, Floyd Toliver topped Clay Allen III, 55.54% to 44.46%. Toliver will meet the winner of the Republican runoff in November’s general election.

The Republican runoff election is set for May 26. The last day to register for the runoff is April 27. Early voting for the runoff starts May 18 and concludes May 22.
